This design originated in Japan with the paper chain pot system. The seed tray bottom has large holes and the seed tray insert has smaller holes. At rest, the holes in the insert do not line up with the holes in the bottom of the tray. This allows you to shake seed into each smaller hole. With a squeeze of your fingers, the insert lines up with the holes in the bottom of the tray and the seeds drop into each paper chain pot cell. For a video of the seeder in action, see our gallery page.
This seeder was originally designed in Japan, where virtually all vegetable seed is available in pelleted form. It works best with round or 'roundish' seed. It can work for alliums, pelleted lettuce, beets, spinach, cilantro, brassica (cabbage family) crops, and other round seed.
Each seeder comes with one insert. Additional inserts are sold separately.
Seed plates are available with different hole sizes depending on the size seed you are planting. Seeder inserts with small holes are made with thinner stock material to help ensure you only get one seed per hole. Larger hole inserts are made with thicker stock material. It is also possible to use larger/deeper holes if you desire to plant multiple seeds per cell.
If you plant many different kinds of seeds, you will need several different seed plates. We offer several standard sizes but can make seed plates with virtually any hole size (up to 8mm) based on your particular needs.
Every-other-hole seed plates are available to enable you to seed your paper chain pots to get double the in-row spacing (12 inches for LP303-15 paper pots and 8 inches for LP303-10 paper pots).
The following are the standard seeder insert hole sizes:
2.0mm: Recommended for brassicas and other small seed (this is the smallest practical hole size)
2.8mm: Recommended for alliums, larger-seeded brassicas, and other small seed.
4.0mm: Recommended for pelleted lettuce, small-seeded varieties of spinach and beets, cilantro, and other seed that is approximately 3.5to 3.9mm in size.
4.5mm: Some growers of pelleted lettuce prefer a 4.5mm hole over the 4.0mm hole. Will also work for many varieties of spinach and beets.
5.0mm: Recommended for larger seeder varieties of spinach and beets, seeding alliums in bunches.
NOTE: the seeder does not handle tiny seed well. Tiny seed can get caught between the two layers of plastic.
